Cards for Kit

Thank you for all the cards and goodies you've sent. Mail call is very important to Kit. Kit is now in outpatient treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center and it looks to be a long recuperation. He would appreciate any encouraging thoughts you might like to send:

This week Kit is supposed to find out when surgery is scheduled to repair the nerve in his leg.

Cards, cookies, and other goodies are much appreciated, but please do not call Walter Reed.  We will try and update this page as we have any news.

Kit came through the neuro-reconstructive surgery well. He expects some improvement from the surgery, but will be immobilized for 3 weeks and expects a painful recovery.

January 2010 Update

Both Kit and Sandi were able to come home for a holiday visit.

Kit and Sandi are installed in Mologne House on the Walter Reed Hospital campus, awaiting his surgery January 13.

This week they will do a MR Neurography, with exploratory surgery and perhaps neuro-reconstructive surgery to follow.  We will try to keep updates posted. Sandi and her family send thanks for all your prayers and ask them to continue for his recovery.

A Quick Trip Home
10-20-09
Kit and Sandi were able to make a short "convalescent leave" trip home last weekend.

Kit's able to walk with a "boot" now, even though he has no feeling below the knee. Hopefully he will find out this week when surgery will be scheduled. They plan on doing to repair the nerve in his right leg - it will start his recovery all over (he'll be in a wheelchair for a while) but the goal is to get feeling back in the foot so he can walk normally.

Kit spoke at his alma mater, Benedictine Military School, on Tuesday before he returned to Walter Reed.

A 2005 graduate, he was able to educate the students with his experiences and encouraged them to donate school supplies for the children of Afghanistan.

He also surprised them with the gift of his Purple Heart,to be displayed as inspiration at the school.

Monday was spent at the Quilt Store, packing up 14 boxes of school supplies to ship to Afghanistan.

Liisa Temple, wife of SMSgt. Rex Temple (leader of the school supplies program) was here, along with Matthew Freeman's mom.

Mrs. Freeman brought Kit the last care package sent to Matt.  Kit is repackaging it to send to Matt's fellow Marines.
Along with Chief Warrant Officer Martin Calkins and his wife Beth (who collected supplies with Boy Scout Troop 400), they filled a container that is now on its way to Afghanistan.

Before they left Washington, DC, they wer able to visit the Museum of National History and the Supreme Court, where Kit met Justices Samuel Alito and (Savannah's own) Clarence Thomas.

Field Trips
Between therapy and doctors' visits last week, Kit and Sandi were able to go on a couple of field trips.
A visit to the US Marine Corps Museum got Kit proving he is battle ready - he was able to pick up a pack and qualified in shooting. But, they still wouldn't let him get on the bus!

Sandi was able to set up a sewing corner...it's a necessity!
Off to the Races

An organized trip to a National Guard event at a NASCAR race was a highlight of the week. Sandi and Kit had garage passes and a great seat to see the race.

Working Out
The Goal - Get That Leg Moving

Kit has been working hard and the Colonel has been pushing him. Yesterday he was able to get the proper heel-toe movement - a real "Cigar Moment" but he had almost no pressure on his foot.

It will come with the physical therapy he is receiving at Walter Reed. He was able to straighten the leg out himself with a five-pound weight.  The painful part was when the Colonel straightened his leg from behind!

In the end his leg was wrapped by the coolest nurses in the Warrior Clinic - Candy and Lisa!

The best part of the day is mail call - thanks to all of you who are keeping our boy going!!

Out and About - Kit Begins His Recovery
9-3-09
Now that he's been checked out of the hospital for outpatient treatment, Kit has been able to journey outside of the medical center.

This means that Sandi and he have had to learn to cope with the wheelchair and the new adjustments it requires. There have been many bright spots, however.

While looking for a place to get Kit some clothes (he got "tired of looking homeless"), Sandi found (what else) a Harley shop - Old Glory Harley Davidson! There just happened to be an event there raising money and awareness for the National Fallen Heroes Monument (www.NationalFallen Heroes.org).

Kit bought a bell for his wheelchair (for good luck or to warn his mom when he's escaping?) and was even able to sit on a bike (first time since he was deployed)! The cheerleaders weren't bad either...

In Memory of Captain Matthew Freeman

Last week Kit and Sandi were honored to attend Capt. Matt Freeman's memorial service in Anapolis.

Capt. Freeman’s family has established a scholarship fund in his memory. If you would like to participate, please make checks payable to “Captain Matthew Freeman Memorial Scholarship” and send to:

Kit has a serious gun shot wound to his right thigh. After several surgeries, he is now beginning the long process of physical therapy to regain the use of his leg.

He has enjoyed receiving your letters and cards along with visits from well-wishers. They keep his spirits up during the hard times.

Kit has been discharged and is now receiving outpatient therapy.  Sandi is with him (he still needs 24-hour monitoring) .
